Cornelia Funke is internationally the best-known and most successful German children’s author. Today she lives in Los Angeles in California, but her career as an author and illustrator began in Hamburg. After training to be a teacher (Diplom-Pädagogin) and after completing a course of studies in graphic art, she worked as an illustrator of children’s books. Because she was not always happy with the stories she had to illustrate, she began to write herself. Cornelia Funke has now written over 50 books, which have been published in over 40 languages.
“At one level Cornelia Funke writes books for children, but she also inspires readers of all generations. With her international best sellers in the "Tintenherz-Trilogie" and also with her earlier "Wilde Hühner" books Cornelia Funke has established herself as one of the greatest children’s authors of our times. She brings the old, profound tradition of storytelling to new life in the most creative ways. That she was originally an illustrator shows itself in her extraordinary love of the details which generate the magic of the fantasy words in her novels. Cornelia Funke‘s work belongs to that type of literature which allows us to become authors of our own stories“, thus the laudation of the Bavarian Minister-President, Horst Seehofer.
